Char-Broil Grill Reviews

Are you in the market for an affordable BBQ system with outstanding performance capabilities? If that is the case, you need to check out products made by Char-Broil. This company excels in designing fantastic units in every category. We will not do Char-Broil grill reviews per se in this article. Instead, we will focus on getting you to know the brand and various groups of grilling systems they make. Regardless of whose side you are on and whether you like gas, charcoal, electric, or portable BBQs, we believe that you can find units that will amaze you in this article.

Brand History

W.C. Bradley Co was founded in 1885 in Columbus, Georgia. They started as a cotton factory, but they quickly evolved into a renowned home and leisure consumer goods manufacturer they are today. They established the Char-Broil brand in 1948, and it has been in the ownership of the family ever since then. At the time, they responded to the development of the market of “backyard leisure” with their first charcoal grill that was designed of cast iron.

They’ve gone a long way from then, and today they are producing grills of all types, as well as parts and accessories. The outdoor cooking division of the W.C. Bradley Co also makes Dancook, SABER and Oklahoma Joe smoker. You might even know the company for their Zebco fishing gear or the Lamplight brand.

Gas Grills

Char-Broil offers an extensive range of gas grills for BBQ lovers. Each of the series has models that are budget-friendly, but also those that are on the expensive side. But overall, you get the impression that the company won’t take you a dime more than needed and that each product is an excellent value for the money.

Char-Broil Quickset

This series has two models, and they are an excellent choice if it is your first encounter with a gas grill. The Quickset 2 Burner is a basic unit that has 265 square inches of grilling space that get their heat from two burners that boast 26,500 BTUs per hour. The moment you see this grill, you will notice that it’s not a high-end model. The side shelves are of plastic, but they are still useful as a working area. The wheels are prone to braking, but you can’t deny that mobility is present. In short, you get all the features that a gas grill should have, but at an affordable price and at the cost of limited durability. The crucial thing is, however, that it delivers excellent results. As for the other model, Quickset 3 Burner offers another central heater and a side burner, as well as more cooking space.

Char-Broil Classic

The Classic 2 Burner model will remind you of the Quickset counterpart and with good reason. There are small differences in design and performance, but they are very similar. That is why we will focus on the Char-Broil Classic 4-Burner, which is one of the best Char-Broil grills we had the chance to test. The four central heating tubes provide up to 40,000 BTUs of heat output. The unit is also equipped with a side burner on the left, and that brings the total power to 50,000 BTUs. That potential is more than high to properly heat up 660 square inches of the cooking surface (180 square inches is reserved for the warming rack). Unlike the Classic 2-Burner, the side shelves are of painted metal, while the handle and the lid are of stainless steel. Add automatic ignition to the mix, and you get a product worth every cent.

Char-Broil Signature

Arguably the most famous series of grills designed by Char-Broil, the Signature series has three core models – 2-Burner, 3-Burner, and 4-Burner. However, each unit comes in a couple of different color-styles, and you can also choose whether you want the TRU-Infrared feature with it (we will talk more about it later).

The main difference in these models is the size of the available cooking space and power output, but that comes as a result of the number of burners. The smallest 2-Burner unit provides 485 square inches of grilling space, but only 350 is considered as central (the rest is a warming rack). It has a bit unusual design. Although it has that look of a traditional grill, it’s pretty narrow, which affects the shape. As a result, the enclosed cabinet below the unit is somewhat smaller in available space.

The other two units, Signature 3-Burner and Signature 4-Burner, also have a side burner beside the main heating tubes. The most massive model offers a combo of 525+200 for the available cooking surface, which means you can host up to ten people on your BBQ party. Both models support liquid propane and natural gas options, but you will need a conversion kit sold separately.

Char-Broil Performance

The Performance series takes it one step further – it provides everything from a compact 2-Burner model up to the massive 6-burner grill. Let’s focus on the latter one because it is an incredible deal for such a large system. The total cooking surface is 900 square inches, including the warming rack of 250 square inches. However, you are probably more curious about the power it provides.

Performance 6-Burner packs 65,000 BTUs of heat, and that doesn’t even include the side burner (extra 10,000 BTUs). The heaters are conveniently spread below the entire grilling area. Thanks to the knobs on the front panel, you can separately adjust the heat that comes from each of the tubes. It will take some mastering, but you can use this product to cook on both direct and indirect heat at the same time. The side station can be turned into a prep area if you are not using it, while the enclosed cabinet is the perfect place for all your grilling tools. Although the unit is massive, four rollers can be used for movement from one to the other side of the yard.

Other Models

Advantage and Commercial series are also produced by Char-Broil, but we would like to discuss their premium gas model called SmartChef. The company is keeping up with the technology, and this gas unit enables Wi-Fi control of the grill. It means that there is no babysitting required. You can turn the grill on and go inside to watch TV while monitoring that the grilling process is going well.

As for general features of the product, it can cook for up to eight people at once (575 square inches of cooking space). The material used for the construction is of the highest quality, including the grates that are of cast iron. SmartChef also takes advantage of the TRU-Infrared cooking system for impressive grilling results. Its only downside is that it is a bit pricey when compared to other Char-Broil units, but you still can’t say that it is too expensive.

TRU-Infrared Grills

Let’s talk about infrared grilling. The fundamental advantage of this way of heating the cooking surface is even cooking. Regardless of where you place the steaks on the grate, you will get the same result. And the result will be incredibly juicy and delicious food. That’s another benefit of infrared heating, and it’s thanks to the fact that it involves less airflow. That enables the juices to stay locked and infuses your food with delicious flavor.

The TRU-infrared cooking system is applied to four series of Char-Broil grills, including Signature, Performance, Commercial, and SmartChef. Compared to the models that use gas burners with no infrared technology, these units are pricier, but they will considerably improve the quality of your grilled food. Keep in mind that infrared heat is not suitable for lower temperatures, which means that it’s not appropriate for smoking or slow-roasting your meals.

Charcoal Grills

Although they offered the first charcoal grill to the American market, today they don’t have a wide range of coal systems in their selection. Let’s take a look at the models we singled out:

American Gourmet

The three grills that are part of the American Gourmet edition are among the most affordable by this manufacturer. That doesn’t mean you don’t get a grill that can last for years if you take proper care of it. Many believe that the grates are the core of a charcoal unit and Char-Broil ensured to provide cast iron cooking grates of the best quality. As you might assume, the main difference in three models – American Gourmet 18”, American Gourmet 24”, and American Gourmet 30” – is size. The last one has 840 square inches of surface intended for cooking, so if you purchase it, you can invite the entire street over for a barbecue.

TRU-Infrared Kettleman

There are two reasons why Char-Broil Kettleman is different than the others. First, it offers a kettle design patented by Weber and used in many grills. Second, it is the only charcoal unit that features TRU-Infrared technology. It seems that the manufacturer wanted to bring together the concept that brought success to the competition with something unique to their company. The results are admirable because the Kettleman is a fantastic product. Infrared heating reduces the flare-up chances to slim to none, while the bowl secures that the taste of the food is just like you love.

Char-Broil CB940X

The idea behind this product was to make a high-quality unit that utilizes charcoal as fuel. The overall impression is that they made a far more durable product if compared with the other models from this company. However, the question still remains whether it can match the units of other businesses. Either way, you will get 615 (435+180 for warming rack) square inches of cooking space and an adjustable coal bed that is accessible via the front door. The side shelves, thermometer, and four wheels on the cart are among the other features of this product.

Other Models

They say that there is something about design. If you want to be different than your neighbors, why not try the Char-Broil Charcoal Box Grill that offers boxy elegance. On the other hand, perhaps Charcoal Barrel is more of your choice. In that case, you will have the chance of choosing between two models that vary in size. Char-Broil 780 offers an adjustable charcoal bed and a traditional design along with 780 square inches of central grilling space.

If kamado grills are more your style, make sure to check out Char-Broil Kamander, which is an affordable option for that type of cooking.

Electric Grills

Unlike other manufacturers, Char-Broil only has a single electrical unit. However, that one is more than competitive and can match to any outdoor electric grill out there. We are talking about the Patio Bistro, one of the most popular models designed by this company. It offers just enough cooking space for an average-sized family (240 square inches) plus a small warming rack that you can use for side dishes.

It’s interesting to mention that Patio Bistro uses TRU-Infrared technology that we discussed above. As a result, you won’t have to deal with flare-ups, and you will get exquisite and delicious food each time. If you wrap some wood chips in the foil and place it on the grate, you can also infuse the wonderful smoky flavor into your meals. With these two combined, nobody will recognize that you are using an electric grill. Instead, everyone will think you cooked on a wood-fired one because the food will taste so good!

The overall quality of the material is decent, but the essential components are of the highest quality. You will get cooking grates of cast iron and with a porcelain finish. They can do an excellent job in retaining heat provided by the heating element with 1750 Watt of power. The temperature is controlled with the valve on the front panel, and you can monitor it with the thermometer on the gauge.

The lid handle remains cool to the touch, and the side shelves come in handy as prep space. If you need extra room, you can always fold them. The core unit sits on a four-legged stand with a wire rack. Two wheels are there to secure mobility, but you should keep in mind the 6-foot length of the cord. You will need to assemble the model yourself, but it shouldn’t take too long thanks to the straightforward instructions.

Hybrid Grills

The eternal debate whether gas or charcoal is the better alternative for grilling is still active. Char-Broil decided to try and bring peace with its hybrid grills that offer both. Yes, you’ve read it right; you now can grill using both gas and charcoal on the same unit!

The company offers two options in this category. The first one is Gas2Coal Hybrid Grill. Although it is a gas grill by default, it can be quickly converted to charcoal without any tools. So, if you are in the mood for a relaxing afternoon with deliciously-charred food that coals provide, go with that option. But if you don’t have enough time and you are looking to sear some steaks swiftly, convert back to gas and use all the advantages of three burners provided. They pack a heat output of 40,000 BTUs, and there is even a side burner with 12,000 BTUs. The available cooking surface is also admirable – the central area takes 420 square inches, and you get a secondary warming rack of 120 square inches.

Now, let’s turn our attention to Deluxe Gas & Charcoal Combo Grill. Unlike the previous unit, this one can burn gas and charcoal at once! Granted, that might be a bit tricky for the griller, but when you get used to the unit, the sky is the limit for the food you can cook. Imagine this product as two grills merged in one. The design actually looks like, and the product reminds us of Siamese twins. The left part of the model is intended for gas, and it boasts 36,000 BTUs across three burners. The entire cooking area is 505 square inches. The two-door enclosed cabinet and side shelves provide more than enough prep and storage space. The grill also comes with casters for increased mobility, although it is very massive and heavy, which is why we don’t advise moving it all the time.

Portable Grills
Char-Broil Grill2Go X200

You will find many lists where this tabletop model is marked as one of the best portable grills on the market. All those websites are not wrong because Grill2Go X200 is a real value for money. It uses TRU-Infrared heating system to prevent flare-ups and a single gas burner of 9,500 BTUs. That is more than enough to heat up 200 square inches that you can use to grill burgers or any other food you like.

As a tabletop model, it doesn’t come with a stand, but it has sturdy legs that ensure it stays put on any surface. Grill2Go is ideal for the road as it weighs only 26 pounds and its compact size makes it suitable for any trunk or RV.

Portable Patio Bistro Gas Grill

The success that Patio Bistro Electric achieved motivated Char-Broil to design a portable edition. Unlike its predecessor, this one uses a gas burner that provides 9,000BTUs of heat per hour. The change of fuel was necessary for this unit to become portable in the first place. Although it’s not the most compact in size, Portable Patio Bistro weighs only 27 pounds and can be used for travels.

The product comes pre-assembled out of the box, so you don’t have to bother packing and to unpack it each time. The exciting thing that we noticed is that it doesn’t only have 180 square inches of central space for cooking, but also 65 square inches for warming.

Other Models

American Gourmet, Portable Kettle Charcoal, and CB500X are among mobile versions of the standard grills produced by Char-Broil. There are also classic Portable Charcoal and Portable Gas models for those who only care about the price. However, keep in mind that none of the models from this category is expensive. That means that it might be worth it to give a bit more money for a better product.

Why Choose Char-Broil

According to the data on the official website, it was this manufacturer that made the first charcoal grill. In fact, it was the first one that offered it for sale on the market. There is no doubt that Char-Broil has a proud tradition of making excellent products. While making sure to stay true to their heritage, they are also not immune to innovation. They keep up with the latest trends, such as electric or gas grills.

It’s nice to see that they understand the needs of the market. They correctly realize that no chef is the same. Someone prefers charcoal, while other people appreciate gas grills more. You might have been grilling for years or decades, but there are also newbies out there that are just starting. Regardless of which category you belong to, there is a good chance you can find a product that suits you among the Char-Broil’s units.

It’s also nice to see that the company offers features that are unique to their products. The TRU-Infrared cooking system does an excellent job of using infrared heat to cook, and that is why these units are loved throughout the globe. As they state on the official website, they still have gas left in the tank to pursue innovation and continue designing effective BBQ systems.

Final Note

While some other manufacturers, such as Weber, like to brag about high-end grills they produced, it seems that Char-Broil is more oriented towards consumers with average spending power. They manage to combine impressive performance and reliability at a price that anyone would appreciate. You could say that they are a fair manufacturer since they try to put the interest of the users in front of their revenue.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to make high-quality products. In fact, there are millions of people out there delighted with Char-Broil grilling systems. We hope that these Char-Broil grill reviews showed you some of the models that are worthy of your while.
