You Don't Have to Be MacGyver to Build Your Own BBQ Smoker

I field a lot of questions about building your own BBQ smoker or grill, and I never ever get tired of addressing this issue. Smoked BBQ represents a fine art – as precise and elegant as any of the cooking styles out there.

To be able to build your own smoker and enjoy cooking in this manner is a very special thing.  You don’t have to be MacGyver to build a reliable rig. All you need are some basic carpentry skills, and you’ll find that getting a smoker built is a whole lot easier than you think.

One of the very best books I’ve found for learning how to build a great smoker is called Real Barbecue, because it lays out plans for the Big Baby Grill – a double-barreled BBQ smoker that’s pretty darned easy to construct.

The Big Baby is as much a work of art in sculpture as it is a fully-functional DIY smoker.  Follow the steps outlined in Real Barbecue and you’ll be smoking quality meats in no time.
