Petty’s Meats in Longwood, Florida is an inspiration – not only because they are a full service butcher, cheese, seafood and dry goods shop, but because they do things the old way… the right way.  Dating back to 1979, Petty’s Meats prides itself on offering the highest quality beef, pork, chicken, and seafood available.   No antibiotics or hormones here… just the best prime and highly marbled choice meat you can find in Central Florida.

I have been researching local Central Florida butchers now for a little while, and Petty’s is one of the only true sources of high grade, sustainably raised meat and poultry I’ve been able to find that provides access to the retail customer.

High Quality, Non-Commodity Meats for You and Your Family

I bitch and moan a lot on this blog about sustainability, and I know it gets old for some of my readers.  But man, is it really too much to ask that the pork I buy at my local grocery not be laced with arsenic?  I mean really?  A recent article on the Grist.org website entitled “Think Tainted Chinese Pork is Scary? Check out the Nearest Supermarket Meat Case” is enough of a primer to give even the most insatiable carnivore reason for pause.

I spent a few moments talking with Scott Fader, who is in charge of procuring Petty’s meat, poultry, and wild game products.  We discussed the changes that have taken place in the US meat packing and farming industries, and how tough it is to find folks who still raise and offer for sale the premier selection of heritage pork (Berkshire, Tamworth, Red Wattle, and Duroc), wagyu beef, and the like.

I can tell you after visiting Petty’s Meats that you’re in for a shock if you think that buying high quality meat is beyond your price range.  Scott prices his meats at levels that are only marginally above what you’d see in your local grocery, and you’re getting double the value at Petty’s when it comes to taste, tenderness, and the knowledge that your’e supporting a local business that – in turn – supports other small scale providers.

Have a barbecue cook off in play and need some high quality beef, pork, and chicken? Scott will hook you up.  Several cook teams purchase their stuff at Petty’s, and if you cook in Central Florida, there’s a chance you might have been beaten by one or more of them!

Cheeses, Hot Sauce, Craft Beer and More

Petty’s is a foodie’s version of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium when it comes to its offerings of fresh cheeses, awesome sauces, craft beers, and fine wines.  Looking for a nice Herbes de Provence blend? Petty’s has that too – packaged and branded under their own label!  (Yes, there’s Lavender in there, Virginia!… and its’ awesome!)

They have an impressive selection of sauces ranging from some local Florida hot sauces to some specialty BBQ sauces.  I found Pork Barrel BBQ’s All American Spice Rub there, so I knew they were all about high quality stuff.

You’re sure to find a hot sauce to get your taste buds rolling here! Tons of nice local Florida selections!

Want to try new variety of cheese or one that’s just new to you?  No problem.  Pick out the one you are interested in and the cheese experts at Petty’s will provide you with a sample on the spot.

Bottom line, the high quality of goods and family feel of Petty’s makes it a Must Stop for anyone in the Orlando, Florida area.  I know I’ll be back to stock up our freezer as I prepare for the summer BBQ season!
