Blues Hog BBQ Sauce – A Tradition in BBQ Excellence
(Please leave a comment below!)
Over the past couple of years, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and become friends with several professional BBQ competition cook teams. We see each other at various FBA BBQ competition events around the central Florida area, and we sometimes meet on weekends to hang out, build stuff, and shoot the proverbial breeze. On more than one occasion I’ve had the opportunity to ask them about their favorite brands of BBQ sauce, and without fail Blues Hog BBQ Sauce makes its way into the list.

Now there’s commodity BBQ Sauce and then there’s pro-style BBQ Sauce. Commodity BBQ sauce is what I like to call the stuff you can find on most any grocery store shelf in the country. It’s sweet, loaded with tons of stuff you ought not be putting into your body (like high fructose corn syrup and liquid smoke), and is generally indistinguishable from its neighbors on the shelves of whatever aisle its sitting on.
Pro-style BBQ sauce is a whole ‘nuther critter. This stuff would fall into what most people call the ‘craft style’ (NOT to be confused with KRAFT-style) of sauces. Small batch, or minimal ingredient sauces that add depth and complexity to BBQ chicken, brisket, pork, and ribs. No crap, no fillers – this stuff has ingredients you can actually pronounce and is made by folks who care as much about what they’re hoping to put in your bodies as they do about what they put in theirs. (Did that come out right?)

Blues Hog BBQ Sauce
So this brings me to Blues Hog BBQ Sauce. It’s been around for ages, and Bill Arnold, the creator of Blues Hog BBQ Sauce is one of the nicest gentlemen you’re ever likely to meet. I love the flavor of the sauce in its original form the best, and I really wish that they could find a way to make it without using the dreaded High Fructose Corn Syrup!
As such, I probably won’t be buying any in the very near future to use at home. I’m more include to use an all natural sauce like Cripple Creek’s Original BBQ Sauce.
However, as I said, many folks swear by Blues Hog BBQ sauce as a component or base for their own BBQ Sauce concoctions on various BBQ competition circuits. If you use it, I know that Bill is very thankful. I for one am happy to see him have such widespread success with Blues Hog BBQ Sauce. Love it when good things happen to good people.
