BBQ Smoker Friday Best Bets
It’s that time again, folks – and this issue of the BBQ Smoker Friday Best Bets is featuring a cut of meat many of you may not be real familiar with… Tri-Tip.
I’ve scoured the web for posts that address the why’s and wherefores about prepping this often overlooked cut of beef, and I think I have fond a few that you’ll really enjoy.
Some familiar BBQ Smoker related food bloggers appear here, and i encourage you to reach out to each of them via their blogs by leaving comments or contacting them via email with your question.
No one - and I mean NO ONE – gives up the goods on how to prep awesome BBQ and grilled goodness like the folks in BBQ land. One thing they’ll tell you for sure is to get your hands on a Thermapen.
Don’t have a Thermapen? Get one direct from Thermoworks here!
BBQ Smoker Best Bets – Let’s Get Our Tri-Tip On!
How Do You Cook Tri-Tip? - Larry over at the BBQ Grail has a great “round table” type discussion he’s posted on different ways to prepare tri-tip. He also gives a fantastic breakdown of what this cut of meat actually is, so you can translate it to your butcher if he’s unfamiliar with this cut.
East of Santa Maria Tri-Tip - My good friend and Ugly Drum Smoker brudda John Dawson has a few great Tri-Tip posts on his Patio Daddio blog. This is one of the best. John is a master BBQ Smoker and has taken a couple of RGCs cooking on his own Ugly Drum Smokers. If you want to get down and dirty with Tri-Tip, John is your guy. Hands down.
My Try at Cooking Tri-Tip – Wayne over at Big Wayner’s BBQ Blog put this excellent post together on his first tri-tip cooking experience. If you learn best by watching someone step you through their own trial and error processes, then you need to head on over to Wayne’s article. It’s a great one, and it reflect the talent this particular BBQ Blogger has for putting his ‘cue experiences in writing!

Hickory-Smoked Pepper Crusted Tri-Tip – Really nice post that puts tri-tip on the BBQ Smoker into the realm of brisketology. You’ll see what I mean when you read it. Be sure to have a napkin ready to catch the drool! I’m pretty new Trey Moran’s Texas Food Done My Way blog, but will be visiting often!
Tri-Tip Roast on the Grill – Steve Wilson put up a great post on grilled Tri-Tip Roast that I think you’ll really enjoy. Steve’s love of this cut of meat is evident, as he states that “the tri-tip roast holds its own as one of the most tasty and also under-appreciated cuts of beef.” He recommends in this post to cut it thin against the grain after grilling. Head over to the Grilling Companion blog soon. You’ll be glad you did!
How to Cook Your Tri-Tip Without Ruining It – Last but not least, I’ve included a nice article from the Tipsy Cook blog. It’s a good overview of prepping and caring for your Tri-Tip prior, during, and after cooking. Plus – you may be planning to lift a glass to honor our fallen heroes, so the blog name is fitting.
Be safe this weekend ya’ll. And please, keep the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made and continue to make for us in the front of your mind.
God Bless – and Keep the Live Fire Burnin’!
Kevin
